Savannah, Ga.
J and I took a long weekend. It was sort of on a whim, and definitely worth it.
Left Thursday afternoon after Zoe's vet appointment, and jumped on the road for what was supposed to be a 6 hour drive. It turned into almost 7 hours because J's GPS took us a crazy round-about way, plus we failed to remember the hour time difference between Alabama and Georgia so we got in around midnight.
The first night we stayed at this gorgeous place called the East Bay Inn, it was of course a challenge to find a pet-friendly hotel but this one was great! Our huge room had high ceilings, brick walls and an enclosed outdoor patio. Too bad we weren't staying there the whole weekend - but we made the best of it. For the next two nights we stayed at their sister property, the Olde Harbour Inn. This place wasn't as spectacular as the first but the location was perfect. The inn is situated right on River St. which, let me tell you, is where you want to be!
We didn't have any exact plans since we love visiting places and just walking around, soaking up the city. Savannah is the perfect place to do that.
We spent a day wandering the historic district, walking through Forsyth Park (which has the cleanest park bathrooms ever, and a cute little cafe), adoring the squares (every 2 blocks or so), and admiring all the beautiful architecture. It is honestly like a step back in time.
We also drove up to Hilton Head Island, SC to the beach. None of the beaches in Georgia or South Carolina are particularly dog friendly but we lucked out and were in the area at just the right time. At Hilton Head there are certain beaches that allow dogs between the Tuesday after Labor Day and September 30th. Score.
Being that our two pugs, Mac & Zoe, are like our children we couldn't have been happier when they both went running into the ocean. It's taken at least a year of back yard kiddie pools and beach going to get them into the water without a struggle. This past weekend they both just charged in after us and swam like champs. We're such proud parents! (hey, and it's good to know that at least they won't drown in a swimming situation)
So our little trip to Savannah was a complete success. It is a place that I'd love to go back to, and if any of our friends were stationed there at Ft. Stewart we would definitely come visit.
