my fifties inspired apron

For Christmas my mom sent me a Sewing Machine. She thought that since I'd have so much free time in Alabama that I should get into sewing. How...um...stereotypical? Anyways, it's been YEARS since I've sewn anything, although I was quite good back in my 6th grade home-economics class!

I spent almost an hour at the fabric store trying to find the perfect pattern. My lovely boyfriend put up with me and even gave his input (not that I listened). This is what I ended up with...

I wanted something that was kind of retro and a little spunky...I'm fairly happy with my picks. Now onto actually sewing...

I'm bad at following directions (always a rebel at heart, j/k) but it had been so long that I didn't really know where to begin. I had a pretty good picture in my head of what I wanted to do so I started researching aprons online. I found a wonderful tutorial from lululollylegs.

I used her tutorial to figure out my basic dimensions and how to gather the skirt (who knew?!). Here are all my pieces:

Once I had all the ties, front panel and skirt panel all turned right-side-out and pressed it was time for the hard part! I left the bottom of the skirt open and pressed the edges in, then stitched my eyelet lace between the two. I gathered the top, added the front panel with ties sewn in and I was almost done!

The part that really frustrated me was the top piece! I wanted it to cover enough so that it would do it's job (to cover my clothing, hello) but I had gotten it all stitched together and realized when I tied the top ties behind my neck the top puckered out tremendously. So I got out the my trusty seam ripper and started again. A few pleats (and a hundred or so stitches removed then sewn again) later and I was done!

So excited! Now I need to bake something just so I can wear it (and now I can stop wearing the boyfriend's grilling apron around the kitchen)
Next project? Reviving my Sourdough Starter from Carl's Friends.
